Mission Statement
The mission of the San Diego Alliance for Asian Pacific Islander Americans ("the Alliance") is to build community through communication, collaboration & celebration of the cultural heritage and diversity of our Asian Pacific Islander American ("APIA") communities, and to advocate for APIA rights and empowerment through service, education and philanthropy.

Help still needed for Myanmar
The UN’s Cyclone Nargis Response Plan, launched July 10, more than 2 months after Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar, asks donors for $482 million for food, water, sanitation, agriculture, and the Irrawaddy Delta’s other needs, including the health, shelter, education and protection of children and women. The appeal will fund 103 projects by 13 UN agencies and 23 NGOs. Post-Nargis needs were assessed by the UN, ASEAN and Myanmar working together as the Tripartite Core Group.
Support Myanmar Cyclone Relief & China Earthquake Relief
- On May 3, Cyclone Nargis smashed into Myanmar’s Irawaddy Delta, leaving 78,000 dead, 56,000 missing, 1.5 million homeless, and 2.4 million in need of food, shelter, clean water and other aid. One month later, the United Nations estimates that 60% of villagers in the Delta have yet to receive any aid.

International agencies with operations in the field in Myanmar include:

United Nations World Food Programme
UNICEF Myanmar
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, supporting Myanmar Red Cross

- On May 12, a 7.9 earthquake devastated Sichuan in SW China. 69,000 are confirmed dead, 18,000 missing, more than 5 million homeless.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies works with Red Cross Society of China in Sichuan. The Red Cross Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has also flown in workers and aid to Sichuan.

Also devastated: Wolong National Nature Reserve for panda bears near epicenter of May 12 earthquake: 5 workers dead, all buildings uninhabitable, panda enclosures destroyed or severely damaged. Now it is feared that panda habitat and remaining panda population in the wild around the Reserve are endangered. Please give to San Diego Zoo's Wolong Panda Center Earthquake Relief Fund

Or donate by check to Zoological Society of San Diego, mail to:

Welcome to our 3rd annual San Diego Dragon Boat Festival, co-sponsored by SD Alliance for APIAs and SD Dragon Boat Team!

Dragon boat racing in October? Traditionally celebrated on duanwujie, the 5th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar, dragon boat racing has become an international sport with racing schedules that span the seasons. Our festival is held at the end of San Diego Dragon Boat Team’s racing season - an untraditional date, yet like races worldwide, still rooted in Chinese tradition.

So come on down to the San Diego Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, October 20, 9am to 5 pm, at Playa Pacifica (north of the Hilton) in Mission Bay Park, and
- experience the pageantry and ritual of the 2000-year-old traditions of dragon boat racing,
- celebrate the diversity and richness of the cultural heritage of San Diego's Asian Pacific Islander communities
- enjoy a day in San Diego’s great Mission Bay Park, where land meets water
- be part of a greater community – San Diego, still America’s finest city!

The festival is free and open to the public. Fees for 16-paddler dragon boat teams are $640 with 16 t-shirts ($40/person) and $500 without t-shirts. Fees for high school and college student teams (at least 9 full-time students) are $320 without t-shirts, $460 with 16 t-shirts; IDs required.

State Senator Leland Yee, chair of the Senate’s Select Committee on Asian Pacific Islander Affairs, came to San Diego on Friday, May 18, and in 10 non-stop hours, held meetings with San Diego’s Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and other API organizations. He wrapped up the day with a town hall meeting in Taiwan Center where he answered questions ranging from global warming and the war in Iraq, to re-districting and how to get more Asian Americans elected to office.

The San Diego Alliance for Asian Pacific Islander Americans hosted Senator Yee’s lunchtime meeting with San Diego’s Asian Pacific Islanders. The reception was held in the Garden of the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum in downtown’s Asian Pacific Historic District.

Asian Pacific Historic Collaborative Chair Arnold Marquez presented the history of the Asian Pacific Historic District, and the role of the Collaborative in developing the District.

The Senator spoke about the importance of the meetings in San Diego as the first in a series of meetings throughout the state to reach out to Asian Pacific Islander constituents and learn the issues and concerns on their minds.

After lunch, Senator Yee and guests were given a tour of the Museum in the Old Chinese Mission Building, and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Extension across the street.

Museum staff members and volunteers who helped the Alliance with the reception were Alex and Agnes Chuang, Alex Stewart, Jessica Matsumoto, Grace Smith and Mona Taghikhani.

Our Community Mourns
With tears, sorrow and pain, the Alliance shares the grief of the nation and the world over the senseless shootings at Virginia Tech. Our deepest condolences to the victims of the massacre, their friends, schoolmates, families and colleagues.

As we mourn, it is a particular nightmare for our Asian communities that the gunman in the worst campus shooting in US history has been identified as Asian. Fears of an ethnic backlash haunt many.

Cho Seung-Hui was a disturbed young man with rages and pressures within him that finally, tragically, erupted in deadly violence, taking with him 32 innocent lives. He grew up in the States. He was Asian, but he wasn't every Asian.

The terrible, terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech is a tragedy for us all.
